The firsts just keep coming for GRC Lites driver Alejandro Fernandez.
The first Colombian driver to ever compete in Red Bull Global Rallycross when he joined the Lites class in 2014, the karting star took his first podium finishes as a rallycross rookie that same year. As a sophomore, he added even more firsts to that list—first heat win (in Fort Lauderdale), first time leading the point standings (in Daytona), and first pole position (in Barbados). A consistent season and fourth-place championship finish helped him climb to first all-time on the Lites point-scorer list with 756.
But there are still three firsts he’s looking for: race victory, Lites title, and Supercar start.
In the two short years he’s been behind the wheel, AF Racing has grown around him from a one-car squad to a multi-car operation with some of the smartest personnel in the paddock. Fernandez remains the centerpiece of the team as its lead driver, and with rookie teammates Christian Brooks and Travis Pecoy joining him, will have plenty of data to work with to help him get faster.
All those resources add up to make those remaining firsts nearly inevitable.
Between his skill on the track and his personality off of it (he’s a two-time winner of the Lites Fan Favorite Driver award), Fernandez is one of Red Bull GRC’s brightest future stars. As was the case last year, he should be viewed as a 2016 championship favorite.
