From Scott Speed to Nelson Piquet Jr., plenty of top-tier racing drivers have traded in an open-wheel career for immediate success in Red Bull Global Rallycross. California’s Cabot Bigham wants to be the next driver to add his name to that list.
Coming off of his first season in FCC Pro Formula Mazda 2015, taking six race wins on his way to the West Coast region championship, Bigham ascends the ranks once again to compete in GRC Lites. He’ll join Dreyer & Reinbold Racing, the longtime IndyCar organization that took four wins in its first full Lites season last year.
If there’s any team that would be well suited to Bigham’s background, it’s DRR. Both of its drivers last year, Miles Maroney and Alex Keyes, came from similar experience; Maroney was in the championship hunt until the season finale, while Keyes rebounded from missing a pair of races to end the year with victories at MCAS New River, Washington DC, and Las Vegas.
It’ll be a tough act to follow, but don’t expect the rookie driver to be fazed by the expectations. Bigham’s results in 2015 included weekend sweeps in events at both Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and Sonoma Raceway, two of the West Coast’s premier road racing tracks. It’s clear he has the prerequisite ice in his veins to be successful.
If last year’s results were any indication, DRR will once again be one of the top teams in Lites in 2016. Bigham may be a rookie this season, but he’s got the right stuff to reap the rewards and potentially take home some hardware when all is said and done.
