Red Bull Global Rallycross fans looking for the next big thing would be wise to keep GRC Lites rookie Christian Brooks on their radar.
Brooks, an experienced kart racer, joins Alejandro Fernandez and fellow rookie Travis Pecoy at AF Racing for the 2016 season. It’s a natural fit for the California native, who actually raced as Fernandez’s teammate earlier in their respective careers, and now looks to replicate his friend’s success in the transition to rallycross.
The biggest challenges any rookie can face in the step up are adapting to a new car and racing on dirt for the first time. Fortunately for Brooks, he’ll have one of the paddock’s top teams behind him to help with the former, and an experienced off-road racer in Pecoy to share data on the latter. Quite a few teams have used the pairing of pavement and dirt backgrounds to great success in the recent past, and AF Racing is hoping that their two rookies will be no exception.
With a strong karting resume that has taken him the world over, Brooks has the right resume to succeed in Lites. It’s worth noting that many of Red Bull GRC’s most successful drivers, including defending Supercar champion Scott Speed, have used karting experience to propel themselves to rallycross success—their experience in maintaining momentum is crucial in getting the most out of the cars, especially in the naturally aspirated Lites division. Chances are good that Brooks will be among the top rookies in the class this year, and perhaps a surprise championship contender.
