Don’t let the numbers from Collete Davis’ rookie GRC Lites season fool you: she’s got high hopes for 2016.
Davis made a major splash in the season-opening Lites event in Fort Lauderdale last year by becoming the first woman to lead a lap in Red Bull GRC history, doing so on the first lap of her very first heat. She nearly won the last chance qualifier, and was running in the top five before contact sent her car careening off the side of the jump and into the retaining wall.
Still, Davis is a fighter—she proved her resilience by returning to the track unfazed for the restart, and running only until her car could run no longer.
Year two will see the San Francisco native take her River Racing backing to Rhys Millen Racing, where she’ll have teammates to work with for the first time. She’ll also have the expertise of Millen, one of Red Bull GRC’s original drivers and a two-time race winner in Supercar, to lean on as she continues to progress towards the front of the pack.
Davis remains one of the most intriguing driving prospects in the Lites class. Her open-wheel experience proved useful on some of the pavement-heavy courses, and extensive testing has helped her gain confidence and grow more comfortable with the dirt. A full year of seat time should help her mix it up more with the leaders and improve on last year’s best result of sixth place.
In short, Davis is determined to come home with her first Lites trophy this year—preferably sooner than later.
