How quickly can an off-road truck racer transition to rallycross and find the podium? California’s Travis Pecoy aims to find out this GRC Lites season.
An experienced short course racer with numerous race wins and championships under his belt, Pecoy trades in trucks for cars in 2016 as one of two rookies on the AF Racing squad. He’ll join fellow rookie Christian Brooks and Lites mainstay Alejandro Fernandez on the three-car team as they look to chase down the team’s first championship.
Pecoy comes off a successful Modified Kart season in the Lucas Oil Off-Road series, where he placed second in points with five wins and nine podiums. He also made four stars at the Pro Lite level in 2015, posting respectable top-10 runs against a deep field.
Many teams at both the Supercar and Lites level have relied on partnering drivers with different backgrounds to produce results, and the pairing of Pecoy’s dirt background and Brooks’ karting experience is no exception. The combination helped Olsbergs MSE finish 1-2 in last year’s Lites points with Oliver Eriksson and Austin Cindric, and AF Racing is banking on the same concept to help it climb to the top.
Add in Fernandez’s experience as the highest point-scorer in Lites history and some of the top mechanics in the paddock, and Pecoy has all the resources to succeed in 2016.
The only question is when—not if—he’ll make it to the podium.
