Red Bull GRC Fantasy Challenge: Los Angeles Experts’ Picks

October 10, 2017

This weekend’s Red Bull Global Rallycross Los Angeles will be more similar to last year in terms of course layout than weekend format. While the track remains close to 2016’s exciting layout, this year’s California finale will see a single round of race action, rather than last year’s championship-deciding doubleheader.

PLAY FANTASY RED BULL GRC Los Angeles Challenge

With a number of years of Port of Los Angeles competition already under their belts, a number of drivers have already asserted themselves as weekend favorites. As always, we’ve drafted in some of the top folks covering the series to make their fantasy picks for Los Angeles. See if you agree with our experts and play the game here!

Chris Leone (RedBullGRC.com): Scott Speed, Steve Arpin, Patrik Sandell, Alex Keyes (tiebreaker)

You’re crazy (or maybe you have psychic powers?) if you bet against Scott Speed and his 4-for-6 record at the Port this weekend. Of the Tier 2 drivers, Steve Arpin was the only one to take a podium here last year, giving him a leg up. I think your best bet to fill out your Supercar lineup comes from Subaru; Chris Atkinson won the pole here last year, but Patrik Sandell led most of the finale last year, so he’s my pick. As for Lites, Alex Keyes only has one more shot to extend his winning streak to three consecutive seasons, but he dominated here last year.

Pat McAssey (NESN Fuel): Scott Speed, Steve Arpin, Patrik Sandell, Christian Brooks (Tiebreaker)

Scott Speed has been the class of the field all season, and given his past success in Los Angeles, that likely won’t change this week. I’m beginning to sound like a broken record, but Steve Arpin’s consistency throughout this season makes it hard to bet against him. Either Subaru driver could serve you well in LA, but my money is on Patrik Sandell, who podiumed here in 2016. And with the speed Christian Brooks showed in Seattle, he seems like a good choice for your tiebreaker.

Dominik Wilde (Autosport/The Checkered Flag): Scott Speed, Steve Arpin, Chris Atkinson, Cyril Raymond (Tiebreaker)

Although both Tanner Foust and Scott Speed are firmly in the championship hunt, for Tier 1 the pick has to be Speed. His LA record is unrivalled and he does head the points. Keeping it in the championship picture, for tier two I’m going to go with Steve Arpin. He can still win the title, and Loenbro Motorsports has always been strong in LA. Chris Atkinson, I feel, will be a good pick for tier three. The Aussie driver took his first pole in LA last year, and Subaru have been strong in recent rounds. Can he get in the way of the championship fight? In Lites, he may have won the championship already but you’re a fool if you think he’ll be taking this weekend easy—for what feels like the millionth time this year, I’m going to go for the almost unbeatable Cyril Raymond.
