Lyon Wins Battle, deJong Wins War in iRacing #DIRTNight Action from Daytona

January 6, 2018

Mitchell deJong’s dominance of Red Bull Global Rallycross action in iRacing looked to be under threat for the very first time on Friday night, as Nathan Lyon handed him his first loss in heat action on RaceSpot TV from Daytona International Speedway’s short layout. But, still on the front row for the final, deJong recovered to win the main event by more than ten seconds over Michael Guest, with Lyon falling to third.

A hard-fought final saw plenty of heartbreaking moments for top drivers along the way, and a near-curse for anyone running in podium position. On lap six, Logan Clampitt and Sindre Setsaas’ battle for second came to an abrupt end when the two made contact coming to the finish line, ending in a rollover for Setsaas and a DNF for Clampitt. Later, Jake Hewlett, deJong’s Coanda Simsport teammate, ran in second until trouble coming off the jump on the last lap dropped him all the way to seventh.

“This layout is very fun, but it’s also very easy to be super close,” deJong explained after the main event. “Everyone tends to be within a few tenths of a second per lap, so that leads to closer and harsher racing. Obviously, if you have what happened in the heat race—getting a tap from the rear—you can still lose it, but that’s rallycross, and it’s always kind of risky like that.

“Off the start (of the heat) everything was good, but I got a tap from the rear and that sent me sideways. Something weird happened at the end of the first lap, I had really big contact that kind of broke the car from the front. I was just trying to make sure I made it through, and we did, so that was all that matters.”
