There’s no doubt that Scott Speed and Tanner Foust, the Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross teammates who combined for nine race wins this year, have been the class of the Red Bull Global Rallycross field for quite a while now. But if you’re just looking at the championship tables and seeing Speed’s name at the top of the grid for each of the past three years, it might not be quite so evident just how close to one another the two actually are.

Speed and Foust entered the 2015 season finale as the only two drivers eligible to win the championship. Last year in Los Angeles, they were separated by only six points at the end of the year—it was so close, in fact, that the higher finisher in the last final of the season would be the champion. This time around, the gap widened to 19, but Foust still managed to post near-perfect scores in each of the final three races to keep Speed on his toes.
