GRC Lites Champion Mitchell deJong Holds RallyX on Ice Points Lead

March 5, 2017

2014 GRC Lites champion Mitchell deJong continued his near-domination of the three-race RallyX on Ice championship this weekend at Fugelhaugen Motorsenter in Gol, Norway. deJong, who made his Supercar debut with Honda Red Bull Olsbergs MSE last October in Los Angeles, won his semifinal and finished second in the main event to maintain his championship lead.

“This was another exciting weekend!” deJong wrote on Instagram after the event. “The venue here is incredible and the track is one of the most exciting and challenging that I’ve driven on. We finished second in the final after some very hard battles. This has also given us the points lead heading into the final race next weekend.”

Fellow GRC Lites veterans Conner Martell, Alexander Westlund, Sandra Hultgren and 2015 champion Oliver Eriksson were also entered into the event. Of the group, only Westlund was able to make it to the semifinals, where he finished fourth; the result was still good enough to get him to the main event, where he placed fifth and locked into third in points.

Martell, making his RallyX on Ice debut, posted finishes of third and first in his first two heats but encountered electrical issues to preclude him from racing in the final. Eriksson, meanwhile, failed to score enough points to reach the semifinals after DNFs in his first two heats; after winning his last two heats, he joined Red Bull GRC play-by-play voice Toby Moody from the commentary booth to add his expertise to the call of the main event.

The RallyX on Ice season will conclude on March 11 with a round from Östersund Motorstadion in Östersund, Sweden. deJong leads the championship with 27 points. The full event from Gol can be watched here.
