Piquet Sports to field Nelson Piquet Jr. in GRC Lites
Piquet Sports is delighted to announce it will be debuting its all-new Global Rallycross Lites team at the X Games in Austin in June, which will have Nelson Piquet Jr at the helm. The team will compete in all remaining GRC Lites rounds this season, supporting the main Red Bull Global Rallycross Supercar championship, in which Piquet Jr is racing full time with SH Racing, the only driver to be competing full-time in both the Lites and Supercar categories. For the Austin round Piquet Sports announce Go Pro as its title sponsor, the American company that manufacture high-quality personal cameras, frequently used in action and motor sports.
GRC Lites is the junior series to Red Bull Global Rallycross and Nelson Piquet Jr is competing in both championships to maximise his experience as he enters rallycross for his first full season, having participated in selected rounds last year. The Lites class features tightly controlled spec vehicles, which have been built by OlsbergsMSE, and produce 310 horsepower from naturally aspirated 2.4 litre engines and feature all-wheel drive and sequential gearboxes.
Red Bull Global Rallycross kicked off two weeks ago with the first round in Barbados. GRC Lites now joins the main category as a support for the remainder of the 2014 calendar, which comprises nine more rounds:
7 June Austin X Games
22 June Washington
20 July New York
26 July Charlotte
3 August Detroit
23 August Daytona
20 September Los Angeles
27 September Seattle
5 November Las Vegas
Piquet Jr got his first taste of Lites experience last weekend when he travelled to the United Kingdom to participate in the FIA World Rallycross Lites championship, in order to gain experience ahead of X Games. In the main GRC category Nelson is currently fourth in the championship after the Barbados round with forty points and one gold medal under his belt.
Nelson Piquet Jr: “My relationship with Go Pro began at last year’s X Games in Brazil. We’re proud to be working with them officially at X Games Austin because I love their product and use it to produce my videos on and off the track. I will be working hard to win the gold in GRC Lites and will have plenty of material to make a sensational video after the event. I’m really happy that I’m doing Lites as well as Supercar. The categories are quite different but competing in both will greatly help my development in Rallycross.”
Rod Rojas, Motorsports Marketing Manager, Go Pro: “GoPro is proud to have Nelson Piquet Jr represent the brand in the RallyCross Lites class at X Games Austin. Nelson showed impressive speed at the opening round of the Red Bull Global RallyCross in Barbados, and we are looking forward to watching him build on that momentum at X Games.”
