RallyX on Ice Season Kicks Off With Two GRC Lites Champions
Past GRC Lites champions Oliver Eriksson and Mitchell deJong will be among the drivers on the grid for the 2017 RallyX on Ice season, kicking off this weekend in Soderhamn, Sweden. The three-round championship, which visits Sweden and Norway, features the same vehicles used in GRC Lites, equipped with studded tires to race on the snow.
Eriksson has been one of Lites’ most successful drivers over the past two years, finishing first in the championship in 2015 and falling only five points short of defending his title last year. Always quick and consistent, the Swedish racer has earned five victories and 15 podiums since making his debut in the class in 2014.
The 2014 Lites champion, deJong set a record that year by winning seven races for Olsbergs MSE and earned nine podiums in nine starts. Last October, he made his Supercar debut for the same team, racing the #24 Honda Civic Coupe in the season-ending Los Angeles doubleheader. deJong made it to both finals in his debut weekend, and posted a top-six qualifying run on the second day of the event.
Last winter, Kevin Eriksson took the RallyX on Ice title with 40 points and three podiums in four starts. Eriksson would go on to make his Red Bull GRC Supercar debut later in the year, running a third Olsbergs MSE Honda in Atlantic City. Fellow Supercar drivers Patrik Sandell, Sebastian Eriksson, and Austin Dyne also competed last year, while Miki Weckstrom used the series as a tune-up for his rookie Lites season. Other drivers with past GRC Lites experience scheduled to compete this weekend include Alexander Westlund, Eric Faren, and Sandra Hultgren.
