Two pairs of championship contenders took the four heat victories on offer between Supercar and GRC Lites as Red Bull Global Rallycross Seattle I kicked off on Friday night. Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross teammates Scott Speed and Tanner Foust led the way, sweeping the two Supercar heats for the manufacturer.

Supercar Heat 1A featured two 2017 winners, with four-time victor and points leader Speed starting second and Sebastian Eriksson on the outside. A perfect start for Speed, combined with contact between Oliver Eriksson and Patrik Sandell in Turn 1, allowed the two-time champion to extend a lead he would never relinquish. Sandell crossed the line second, while Oliver Eriksson fell to fifth after contact with a tire barrier before taking the jump for the first time.

Subaru Rally Team USA’s Chris Atkinson held the inside line for the start of Supercar Heat 1B, with defending Red Bull GRC Seattle race winner Foust alongside. Foust would take the lead off a clean start, relegating Atkinson to second, Steve Arpin would pull off course halfway through the heat with flames shooting from the rear of his car, allowing Mitchell deJong to claim third place.

In GRC Lites, Christian Brooks took the checkered flag in Heat 1A by leading flag-to-flag, with James Rimmer placing second and Scott Anderson third. Cole Keatts failed to complete a lap after an incident entering the dirt section sent him into the wall and stranded him until race’s end. Heat 1B featured the top three drivers in points, and all three entered the first corner three-wide, but points leader Cyril Raymond hugged the inside line to wrestle the lead away from Conner Martell and Travis PeCoy and led them in that order for the rest of the session.

Red Bull Global Rallycross Seattle resumes on Saturday with the remainder of Supercar and GRC Lites heats, semifinals, and finals. Gates open at 9AM, and tickets remain available at http://www.redbullglobalrallycross.com/tickets. Watch the action live on NBC on Saturday and Sunday at 4:30PM ET/1:30PM PT.
