Speed, Bigham Win First Round of Red Bull GRC Indianapolis Heats
Locally based Supercar teams dominated the first round of Supercar heats at Lucas Oil Raceway, as Red Bull Global Rallycross made its first-ever visit to Indianapolis. Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross’ Scott Speed, the Supercar polesitter, and Bryan Herta Rallysport rookie Cabot Bigham won the pair of heats on offer, concluding an intense first day of racing action.
Supercar Heat 1A began with Bigham nearly spinning but taking the lead as drivers hit the frontstretch. Bigham and Steve Arpin spent most of the race trading the top spot, but Arpin earned a stop and hold penalty for a Joker Lap commitment line violation. That penalty was enough for Bigham to take his second heat victory of the season.
Heat 1B saw Speed and teammate Tanner Foust in a drag race on the first lap, with both drivers saving the longer Joker Lap for the final lap. Unfortunately, that proved to be Foust’s undoing; he misjudged the entry and earned a three-second penalty not making the commitment box and cutting the track to take the Joker. Speed was able to take a comfortable win over Honda Red Bull Olsbergs MSE drivers Sebastian Eriksson and Mitchell deJong.
In GRC Lites, DirtFish Motorsports went 1-2 in Heat 1A as Conner Martell led flag to flag and James Rimmer held off Travis PeCoy for second place. In Heat 1B, Christian Brooks took the lead on an exceptional start, but Dreyer & Reinbold Racing teammate Alex Keyes bumped past for the top spot in the dirt on the third lap; however, Keyes’ last-lap Joker enabled points leader Cyril Raymond to take the lead, and Brooks returned the favor on Keyes to regain second.
Red Bull GRC Indianapolis resumes on Sunday with the remaining heats, semifinals, and finals for the Supercar and GRC Lites classes. NBCSN will show the Supercar action tomorrow evening at 8PM ET.
