LAST RACE: Olsbergs MSE X Forces driver Cyril Raymond swept the second doubleheader of 2017 with two more victories last month in Ottawa, his third and fourth in a row after a perfect weekend in New England. Colin Braun and Conner Martell joined him on the podium in Saturday’s final, while Travis PeCoy and Alex Keyes took second and third in Sunday’s main event.
DRIVER CHANGES: New Zealand-born driver Matt Halliday will make his first-ever rallycross start this weekend, joining AF Racing as the latest step in an exciting career that includes experience in Champ Car, A1GP, and Porsche Supercup action, among many others. CORE autosport will not attend this weekend’s event due to scheduling conflicts but plans to return in Atlantic City.
THE TRACK: The .767-mile Lucas Oil Raceway layout puts all of the action in front of the fans, with both the finish line and jump directly across from the main grandstand and one of the longest dirt sections of the 2017 season! Click here for more information.
DREYER & REINBOLD RACING BOASTS HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE: The only GRC Lites team to be based in the Indianapolis area, defending class champions Dreyer & Reinbold Racing will shoot for a podium sweep this weekend with Christian Brooks, Travis PeCoy, and Alex Keyes. The trio ranks fourth, fifth, and sixth in the championship through six rounds, and has taken a Lites car to this course before: earlier this year, Keyes and NHRA driver J.R. Todd took part in a ride swap for sponsor WIX Filters that saw Todd sample his first rallycross car.
HALLIDAY BECOMES GRC LITES’ NEWEST TOP RECRUIT: His birthday is next Friday, but Matt Halliday gets an early birthday present this weekend when he joins AF Racing for his first experience in a GRC Lites car. The Kiwi boasts a diverse resume that includes everything from a stint in the Champ Car World Series to endurance races in V8 Supercars, and will be racing in his first rallycross event.
RAYMOND APPROACHING ALL-TIME LITES RECORDS: Cyril Raymond’s four-race GRC Lites winning streak has the potential to put him in some high company shortly. Wins in the next two events will tie the record for most consecutive victories with six, set by Joni Wiman in 2013. If he breaks that record, he’ll also tie Mitchell deJong’s single-season and all-time records for Lites wins (seven) in the process. Raymond leads the standings by 63 points over DirtFish Motorsports driver Conner Martell coming into the weekend.
QUOTES: A selection of quotes in advance of this weekend’s Red Bull Global Rallycross Indianapolis, the seventh round of the 2017 Red Bull GRC season:
Matt Halliday, #42 AF Racing: “I know I can be quick in one of these cars. This weekend, we will see—this is a completely new experience for me. I’m at the point of my career where I’ve been racing since I was 5 years old. I can do some different things, I have choices, and there are other forms of racing that will be big in the next five years as opposed to what I am currently doing. This is a good format for the future. I’m sure I will enjoy it – how could you not?”
Cyril Raymond, #13 Olsbergs MSE X Forces: “It’s the first time for me being here. Indianapolis is a legendary place for motorsports, and I think it will be a good race. It looks good. We have a long straight line that’s almost flat, and the Joker will be very interesting. For me the track will be great to drive. It’s a legendary course, and I’m happy to be here.”
Alex Keyes, #24 Dreyer & Reinbold Racing: “On Wednesday we got off the plane and stopped by the shop—it’s only 30 minutes from here. It’s cool that it’s close to home. All the guys who are working on the car are driving from their house in the morning. It’s basically home for the entire team. I grew up in the Midwest so this is the closest race to where I grew up in Michigan, and I’ll have family coming out as well. I think it will be a good weekend—we have a lot of people coming and a big hospitality tent. So we should have a lot of cool people out here and I think the track will be interesting.”
