Red Bull GRC Ottawa: GRC Lites Rounds 5-6 Recap

IN BRIEF: French rallycross talent Cyril Raymond continued his domination of GRC Lites with another doubleheader sweep at Red Bull Global Rallycross Ottawa, part of the year-long Ottawa 2017 celebration. The Olsbergs MSE X Forces driver conquered the course at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum on both days to earn his third and fourth wins in a row.

SATURDAY RECAP: While Raymond and Christian Brooks, the top two drivers in the Lites standings entering the weekend, would each win their semifinals, they would finish on the opposite ends of the final. Contact would force Brooks off course in the dirt hairpin early in the event, forcing him to watch as his top championship rival took home the victory.

Colin Braun held second, but third place came down to the wire in a battle between DirtFish Motorsports teammates Conner Martell and James Rimmer. Unfortunately, on the last lap, Rimmer hit a tire stack while trying to make the decisive pass and nearly rolled his car, yielding the position on the podium to his teammate. He was unharmed in the incident.

SUNDAY RECAP: The road to victory was much less straightforward for Raymond on Sunday, as he didn’t win either of his heat races and instead had to rely solely on a semifinal win to get to the front row of the grid. Alongside him was Alex Keyes, who nearly missed the final and was the last car to pull onto the grid.

Raymond and teammate Cole Keatts would take the top two spots early in the final, but Keyes and Dreyer & Reinbold Racing teammate Travis PeCoy would each find a way around Keatts by the halfway point. As Raymond put a large gap on the field, second place came down to the DRR teammates on the last lap; with mechanical issues dogging him, Keyes couldn’t quite hold off PeCoy for second place across the line, but both drivers would make it to the podium.

QUOTES: Driver quotes from Red Bull GRC Ottawa:

Cyril Raymond, #13 Olsbergs MSE X Forces: “It was a very good weekend for me—almost perfect! I had some problems during the heats, someone pushed me very hard, but we had a good comeback in the semifinal. I had a very good start in the final, like a rocket, and I pushed very hard—I like when I control the race! Thank you so much to Canada, Ottawa, GRC, and Red Bull.”

Travis PeCoy, #3 Dreyer & Reinbold Racing: “It was a pretty quiet race until about the third lap when I smacked the wall! It got a little rougher after that, and the gap was set between Alex and me, so I was pretty comfortable in third. I felt a little pressure coming from behind, but on the last lap, I didn’t know this until afterward, but Alex broke his power steering. I saw that he took the Joker and it was a drag race to the finish. I couldn’t be here without Dreyer & Reinbold, they worked their butts off.”

Alex Keyes, #24 Dreyer & Reinbold Racing: “We didn’t even think we were going to make it out! We had a problem with our alternator, so a big thanks to my guys for getting me back out there—they changed it super fast. We were able to make it out to the grid, we got out there, and it was a crazy race. I got on the outside of Turn 1, made a pass on Cole on the outside of the dirt corner, and was trying to chase down Cyril but it wasn’t happening. On the last lap, when I landed the jump, we lost all power steering, so I went off track, came back on, and had a good arm workout for the last lap. We had a good drag race to the line, but Travis got me!”
